Lopsided game

We got all of our hits for the week in one game. We had such a lead, I tried out Motte as a reliever. He instantly gave up 2 HRs. It's good to know in case I'm in a situation where the game is close.

At Busch Stadium, the St. Louis faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel. Rich Harden(1-1) finally bested his St. Louis counterpart,
Joel Pineiro(1-1), by the score of 4 to 0.

Chicago (NL) took the lead off Pineiro in the first inning as they scored 2
runs on 1 base hits. That early scoring was all that Harden needed. Chicago
(NL) had 10 hits for the night while St. Louis had 7.

Pineiro was the loser. He allowed 6 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. With this
win, Chicago (NL) has a 6-10 record. They have been 4-6 lately. With this
loss, St. Louis has a 6-4 record of late, 12-6 overall.

This one was all Carpenter. He pitched a gem!

The offense still has me a little concerned. We had some opportunities, but were unable to deliver. In fact, we seem to have a hard time scoring runs except when an HR is involved. Many of our outs are long fly balls. We've got too many players swinging for the fences with every at bat when a base hit would be more useful. Too bad I can't instruct some of these players the way that Whitey coached Ozzie. Whitey told Ozzie that for every ball hit in the air, Ozzie owed him $$. For every ground ball, he owed Ozzie $$. After about a month, Whitey called off the agreement because he owed Ozzie too much $$.

Chris Carpenter pitched 9 strong innings at Busch Stadium where the St. Louis
Cardinals beat the New York (NL) Mets by the score of 1 to 0.

Carpenter(2-0) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for
the New York (NL) batters. He allowed just 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings
improving his ERA from 2.14 to 1.50. New York (NL) made it exciting in the
9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Tim Redding(1-2) suffered the loss. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances
today,' Jerry Manuel said. 'Carpenter just was too much for our guys.'

For most of the game, the offense was just anemic. We couldn't get anything going. Then, for a brief inning (the 6th), the Cardinals showed up just enough to win the game. Miller so intimidated the Mets' manager that he nearly replaced everyone on the field with substitutions.

crowd to their feet when he stroked a single scoring two baserunners. St.
Louis had only 6 hits for the night.

Adam Wainwright(3-0) went 6 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory.
Wainwright got help from Mitchell Boggs who earned his 1st save. The loss
