lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it
feels great!'

Chicago (NL) took the lead off Pineiro in the first inning as they scored 2
runs on 1 base hits. That early scoring was all that Harden needed. Chicago
(NL) had 10 hits for the night while St. Louis had 7.

win, Chicago (NL) has a 6-10 record. They have been 4-6 lately. With this
loss, St. Louis has a 6-4 record of late, 12-6 overall.

This one was all Carpenter. He pitched a gem!

The offense still has me a little concerned. We had some opportunities, but were unable to deliver. In fact, we seem to have a hard time scoring runs except when an HR is involved. Many of our outs are long fly balls. We've got too many players swinging for the fences with every at bat when a base hit would be more useful. Too bad I can't instruct some of these players the way that Whitey coached Ozzie. Whitey told Ozzie that for every ball hit in the air, Ozzie owed him $$. For every ground ball, he owed Ozzie $$. After about a month, Whitey called off the agreement because he owed Ozzie too much $$.

Chris Carpenter pitched 9 strong innings at Busch Stadium where the St. Louis
Cardinals beat the New York (NL) Mets by the score of 1 to 0.

Carpenter(2-0) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for
the New York (NL) batters. He allowed just 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings
improving his ERA from 2.14 to 1.50. New York (NL) made it exciting in the
9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Tim Redding(1-2) suffered the loss. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances
today,' Jerry Manuel said. 'Carpenter just was too much for our guys.'

For most of the game, the offense was just anemic. We couldn't get anything going. Then, for a brief inning (the 6th), the Cardinals showed up just enough to win the game. Miller so intimidated the Mets' manager that he nearly replaced everyone on the field with substitutions.

Wainwright got help from Mitchell Boggs who earned his 1st save. The loss

Louis Cardinals 4 to 1.

New York (NL) tallied 3 runs in the 3rd inning with the help of 5 hits. That
was all the runs Bobby Parnell(1-1) needed. New York (NL) had 14 hits
overall, while St. Louis had 7.

Parnell got help from Francisco Rodriguez who was credited with his 5th save.
Todd Wellemeyer(0-2) was the loser. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 12
hits and 1 walk.

19 April 2009

Smoltz pitched a gem...only to have the bullpen completely blow it!!!! Derosa had a nice game but the offense was not enough to make up for pitchers who walk in runs. It's a good thing that these sorts of games are not the norm.

Second baseman Jeff Baker had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Wrigley Field where the
Chicago (NL) Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5 to 3.

Carlos Marmol(1-1) was called upon to do the job and he was the winning
pitcher. He went 2 innings surrendering 1 hit and 2 walks lowering his ERA
from 5.06 to 3.68. Chicago (NL) banged out 9 hits on the night.

Brad Thompson(2-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. The win by Chicago
(NL) is a very welcome one as they have been struggling in recent days.
Their record now stands at 3-9 - only 2-8 in their last ten games. St.
Louis, which had been on a roll, saw their record drop to 10-4.

We knocked the starting pitcher out in the first inning!!! Of course when Carpenter gave up 2 HRs, I started to get a little worried. Still, he hung on and the 5 runs in the first were more than enough to win (but Pujols knocked in a couple of security runs with his HR).

a run in the 1st inning, delivered a single in the 2nd inning, banged out a
base-hit in the 5th inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 7th inning and
smacked a single in the 9th inning. For the game St. Louis out-hit Chicago
(NL) 12 to 7.

Chris Carpenter(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Ryan Dempster(1-2) ended up with the loss. He allowed 5
hits and no walks in 1/3 of an inning.

17 April 2009

Whew! This was a close one. Pineiro pitched a gem, and I was tempted to let him finish the game. Instead, I brought in Franklin, who blew the save. The offense was fairly anemic, but Derosa came through with an off-the-bench HR, just when we needed it. McClellan got into a little bit of trouble but was able to finish the game.
